onntaraccr. Honey market. New York O.ilil Qnntatlims S.ui FraticUco Legal lender raten, Tjj Uitf&M Cosmos S. M. I'o. Tlio oflicers of this vompunv, 8y9 the Owyhee Aealnnche, ar rived here I lie 1st of November. They had tn) mill 8 to sclented ; not nil order out for lumber ; not u man employed, ind 8 ringers to nil. On the titb of November the ground was b oken for a mill foundation, nnd now it is neurly completed. Tho building is fully enclosed ;" bnttt-ries and stumps rcudy tor crushing ; tho f ame up, and gearing for the i'iii3 in position; the engine bolted fast through a stonu bol of six feet, and the ma-oury for the boiler goiug up rapidly and vrA'. This company's mine, tho Silver Le gion, is being worked night and day. The shaft U 5x9 and down TO feet. At the sur face, the quarU was gold-bearing, but each foot downward it approximates silver, nd improves in richness. They have nearly 200 tons of pay rock ready to draw0 tho mill, and their road about finished to the mine. The company intend to rink the present shaft but little deeper, run side drifts und supply the mill from this mine. During the early part of the coming summer, uoist- in if works will bo sub tituted for the wind lass. One of Ericsson's improved hot air engines will be used, nnd has already -been nr 'erc 1 from New York, and is expected to reach here in May. The old hot air engine proved a failure, but the improved one is it 6uu:ess. Mr. Musgrave, Superintendent of the Cosmos Company, bus seen it work nnd knows what he is ordering. The engine works noiselessly, nnd one of eight horse power occupies a spaco of only five feet 8q.in.rc, and can be placed in an ordinary tbafl bouso, nud weighs near one ton. Its economical character is its especial recom mendation. No water is needed, and one fourth of a cord of wood will supply one of eight-horse power twenty-four hours. We have little doubt but. two years from now War Eagle nnd Oro Kino mountains will be dotteJ ull over with these machines. . FRANKLIN MARKET. Thr Yrekn Union notes the fact that files of tho Mountaineer (rom the 12th of December the 22d of January were received at that office on the 1st of February. The delay un til Ibe 2 2 J of January was doubtless due to the suspension of navigation, but the nine days from Portland to Yreka was plainly more time than is allowed by the terms of tbe contract for the daily mail. A down east editor, in a complimentary notice of a vigilant general, was made, by the omission of a single letter, to call him a battle-scared veteran. Tbe poor man has toned to make amends in bis riext issue by stating that it was bis intention to hare de nominated the hero a bottle-scarred veteran True Lincoln Mini and Mill. Tho twenty stamp mill of ibe Lincoln Mill Company, at Owyhee, is fust approaching completion. Work on the company's mine, a fourth ex tension of the Oro Fino, is carried on uight and day, and a considerable addition has been made to the working force of late. Ths Kansas City Journal of Commeret an jounces that there is in contemplation in Unit tily the starling of a stage and express com pany to carry freight nnd passengers and nails from that point to New Mexico, Arizona, Salt Lake and other places. The enterprise I) in opposition to tbe ButterGeld Stage and Express Company. A general feeling of opposition- to tbe payment of war damages is manifested throughout tbe east and north. Tbe spolia tion of sections of the States adhering to the Union by (he rebel armies, inflicted heavy tosses on Union men, but these, it seems, are to be rejected with all others. Tub second prize -fight between Con Orem and Patsey Mnrtey came off nt Virginia City on New Year i Day. This time Orem thrash ed bis antagonist in uinety-nin rounds. Jlarley traveled some thousands of miles to fight Orem, and having got a good -beating has left Montada and gone ta Salt Lake. The radical Chicago Tribune Buys Mr. Sumoer's proposition'' that, in an states wnere ono'aixtn or the popi illation aro colored, one-half of each grand jury shall consist of colored men, should be amended so that, in placos where two-sixths of tho dodu- latlon are blaok, all the jurors shall be colored, and where one-eixth of the people aro molattoos, one-half 'of the 'jarors shall be colored women.
